Гай, невинно обвиненный, настолько же лишен инициативы и свободы действий, как и его товарищ по несчастью – персонаж Генри Фонды в фильме Не тот человек, The Wrong Man. Как и герой Фонды, Гай искупает некую метафизическую ошибку, связанную с первородным грехом. Для Хичкока, кажется, в мире не существует полностью «невинно обвиненных»: Гай думал об убийстве, хотел совершить убийство и поэтому вступил в заколдованный круг вины. И главная схватка Случайных попутчиков происходит, ни много ни мало, между Дьяволом (в блестящем исполнении Роберта Уокера) и его порождением. Именно в таких местах, когда режиссер чувствует, что крепко держит публику он позволяет себе на время отключиться от сюжета и увлечься визуальными узорами, складывающимися в целую симфонию образов и звуков, где удовольствие от рассказывания истории уступает место чистому наслаждению от создания динамичных пластических образов.
